The pictures above are of our Corral project May 17.  We prepared lunch for the kids and their families.  Click the small pictures to see them in larger format.  We had a great time as did the kids riding the horses, fishing and visiting with their friends.

Matt Rainey, Harry Hunter and Brett Bone (L to R) participated in the Log a Load Shotgun tournament on Sat., April 19,2008.  The total proceeds were donated to The Children's Miracle Network.  The Newnan Optimist Club is pleased to have provided some of the funding for Matt's team.

Local Students Win Area Oratorical Contest

An Area-level Oratorical Contest was held at the Houston County Career and Technology Center in Warner Robins, Georgia on April 12.  This event was scheduled for the winners of the Zone-level Oratorical Contests recently conducted by Optimist Clubs in Zones 6, 7, and 10 of the Georgia District of Optimist International (OI).  All of the contestants delivered a speech on this year’s OI topic “Why Me?  Why Not?”

The girls’ winner of the Area Contest was Mara McGurl, and the boys’ winner was Nick Anderson - both representing Zone 10.  Mara was sponsored by the Senoia Optimist Club, and Nick was sponsored by the Newnan Optimist Club.

Lt. Governor Ida Jones from LaGrange, who heads up Zone 10, was excited that both contestants from her Zone won at the Area level.  “It’s been many years since both winners at the Area-level have been from our Zone, and I think it’s wonderful”, said Mrs. Jones.  “The other contestants were also very good.”

As the winners of the Area event, McGurl and Anderson will next compete in the District Contest that represents the entire state of Georgia.  This competition will take place during the Georgia District’s quarterly conference that will be held May 2-4 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Macon, Georgia.  A specific time will be announced later.

Since its start in 1928, the Oratorical Contest has become the longest-running community service program sponsored by Optimist International.  Nearly 2,000 clubs participate in this program each year, making it by far the most participated in program in Optimist International.

Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with 120,000 adult and youth members in 3,800 clubs in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico and throughout the world.  Carrying out the mottos “Friend of Youth” and “Bringing Out the Best in Kids”, Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than six million young people each year.

The Club provided a party and some great fun for the folks at the Rutledge Center.  A great time was had by all as you can see from these pictures!  Below L - R Bill, David and Pete attempt the death defying green ballooney trick.
